So is our Indian society a bit hypocritical when it comes to marriage?

March 19th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Insights, Love & Sex

Well we have all heard the arguments that go around arranged and love marriages. Not sure which one is better but in either case its a bond between two people and their future together. The reason this post finds the traditional and culture topic around how people should get married a bit hypocritical is because this practice is no where seen in the western world, we criticize the marriages and live in relationship concepts that the west practice. That’s all fine to criticize but why is it that when we need to study further our parents want us to go and study in the US, Canada, UK, etc. Why is it if a company overseas is recruiting we go all crazy to apply for jobs overseas? When it comes to marriage why is it that our parent are not comfortable to allow their children to marry any Indian or for that matter any human that they find interesting?

If families can be confident that young people can live overseas by themselves to studies and to work then, do our parents doubt our judgment to marry the person we feel comfortable with? or is it because we still believe in a caste system and the community we come from?

No matter how we try and avoid the situation even to this day we still have many Indians who believe in the dowry system, specially if they are from the boys side. Lets not fool ourselves, this is now disguised as parents wanting to give their daughters security.

These are questions that a few of us have asked and all we receive is the standard answers such as “its our culture and tradition”, “we know what is best for you”, “what will the community think of us if you marry that girl or that boy”, etc.

Religion suddenly becomes an important issue. Where did god say that you need to marry only your kind. Are we all not Gods children? Have any of us actually spoken and met God in person to ask how many real gods are there? Some say its the values set by our 4 fathers that plays an important role.

If tradition and culture is so important are we agreeing that all Indians have different standards of tradition and we are not one country as we have diverse cultures that have various degrees of standards. If that’s the case when we get affected by recession how come at that point we label ourselves as Indians. When it comes to standing tall to our country in times of war why is it the Indian army is known as the Indian army and not through which traditional background they come from?

If we value our tradition and culture so immensely then we should all stop migrating to other countries as the culture is completely different to what we are use to. Why is it that we prefer an Indian living overseas to come down to India and get married to a traditional Indian girl or Indian guy? Are we sure that these people hold the same tradition or have they become a bit different since they have lived overseas and could be infected with the overseas culture bug?

These are a few questions that over the past we may have questioned ourselves about but have never bothered to receive answers. India is no more a developing nation it is going to be a strong super power nation. In a nation that is so powerful where democracy is something we believe in, don’t you think its high time to respect our tradition and be free as humans to choose who we want to spend the rest of our lives with?
