Ragging in India - Is this acceptable?
Too many Ragging is a form of abuse on newcomers when they enroll at educational institutions. Over the years we have heard good and bad about ragging. Wikipedia defines this as “Ragging’ means the doing of any act which causes, or is likely to cause any physical, psychological or physiological harm of apprehension or shame or embarrassment to a student, and includes– (a) teasing or abusing of playing Practical joke on, or causing hurt to any student. or (b) asking any student to do any act, or perform any thing, which he/she would not, in the ordinary course, be willing to do or perform.”
After having read stories and comments on the internet here are some of the incidents that have taken place
Story 1:
When I was in college my seniors made all the freshers naked and we were taken to a railway station late at night, we had to walk up and down at the platform naked. I spent many nights after that at the platform, avoiding the hostel.
I hope this does not happen to anyone else now.
Story 2:
19 year old Aman Kachroo enrolled at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College Himachal Pradesh last year. He had repeatedly complained to his parents about the brutal ragging incidents, his parents did not think that it was that serious. On Friday night and Saturday morning (March 6th-7th, 2009) Aman was beaten up that he died of brain hemorrhage. This is a video that gives you a short news report. Let’s all say a small pray to the Universal force to protect our students and to help Amans family cope with this loss.
Story 3:
Durgesh Shukla in 2007 hanged himself in his hostel
room ceiling and left a suicide not note holding his seniors responsible for his death. Shukla had visited home earlier that month for 2 days and had confided that seniors were mentally torturing him.
So do you think ragging, should remain in our colleges from all the tragedies that we hear or should this practise be banned all together?

i belong to the last batch that was brutally ragged before the incident of the death of medico occured in chidambaram in 1996. i still maintain good and healthy relationship with the seniors who assaulted me. i ask one question that what would you do when you are assaulted in second or third year of your college life by a senior? what do you do when you are insulted in front of patients by the faculty? you dont adjust and just commit suicide. no…
ragging taught me togetherness, sharing, respect and obidence.
